This collection consists of 252 photographs, primarily of women in nursing uniforms, taken in Memphis, Tennessee in about 1923. There is a portrait of a woman identified as Eva Montgomery in a nursing uniform, four loose photographs of people posing in a park, and 247 photographs glued to black photo album pages. In one photograph, a license plate with the year 1923 is visible, which gives insight into the time period in which the photographs were taken.

The collection opens with a photograph of Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Many of the photographs are snapshots of nurses, often posing with each other, babies, children, or cars. There are also photographs of people (primarily women) in regular clothing in a variety of locations, including several in snow.

There are people identified in the photographs as Eva Montgomery,Dr. Maury,Dr. Toombs,Miss Jones,Miss Mann,Miss Beesley, and Bess. No additional identifying information is given.

Abstract

This collection consists of 252 photographs, primarily of women in nursing uniforms, taken in Memphis, Tennessee in about 1923.

Biographical/Historical Note

This collection includes a photograph of Baptist Memorial Hospital, which opened in Memphis in 1912 as a 150-bed facility. By the early 1920s, it was the largest privately-owned hospital in the South.

Dr. Maury, identified in one of the photographs, is Dr. John Metcalf Maury, who was a professor of gynecology at the University of Tennessee Nursing School as well as the gynecologist-in-chief of Memphis General Hospital. Dr. Toombs, identified in another photograph, is Dr. Percy Walthall Toombs, a professor of obstetrics and obstetrician-in-chief at Memphis General Hospital. No biographical information could be found for Eva Montgomery, a nurse identified in several photographs.
