Abstract

This collection houses original letters, poems, photographs, and drawings documenting Nettie Alma (Blevins) Buttram, formerly of Oneida, Tennessee and the subject of Barbara Cueter's historical fiction memoir entitled Sand Against the Wind. Additionally, this collection contains the notes and drafts that Cueter created while writing and editing the book.

Biographical/Historical Note

Barbara Cueter, author of Sand Against the Wind, was born in Tennessee and later moved to Michigan. Inspired by her interest in WWII and the Great Depression, she researched the life of Nettie Alma (Blevins) Buttram and composed a historical fiction memoir about Nettie's life.

Nettie Alma Blevins was born to William Joseph and Barbara Ellen (Range) Blevins on December 17, 1911. She married Millard Buttram (1904-1974) on September 7, 1929 and the couple had nine children: Barbara Lou, Arbria Ella, Glenna J., Carolyn J., Raymond J., Rose Catherine, Larry Allen, Ralph, and Sharon. Nettie Buttram died on January 3, 2007 in Plano, Texas.
