This collection houses a letter and two posters documenting William E. Gillenwaters' work as deputy warden of the Tennessee State Prison in Nashville during the early 20th century. The letter is addressed to the Sheriff of Knox County and discusses three convicts, James Reed, J. D. Coleman, and Will Coleman. The two posters warn the public of two convicts at large, Martin Brophy, alias John Leonard (with photograph), and Marshall Ladson.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Ervin Gillenwaters was born on January 15th, 1872 to Isaac Snodgrass (1848-1934) and Mary Jane (Short) (1853-1918) Gillenwaters. He served as the deputy warden for the Tennessee State Prison in Nashville before becoming a secretary of the juvenile court. He was married to Margaret Ellen Shafer (1872-1927) and the couple had one child, Margaret E. (1908-). William died on February 20th, 1916 at the age of forty-four. He is buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
