Biographical/Historical Note
Hu Brown (sometimes written as Hugh Brown) founded one of the first newspapers in Knoxville, the Knoxville Register, with his brother-in-law Frederick Steidinger Heiskell in August of 1816. He left the newspaper in 1829 to accept a teaching position with East Tennessee University. Brown died in about 1838 and his young daughter, Susan Rice Brown, was raised in F. S. Heiskell's household.
