This collection houses ten promissory notes issued by the Bank of the State of Tennessee between 1821 and 1824.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Bank of the State of Tennessee was chartered in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1811 with capital holdings amounting to $400,000. It opened for business on November 30, 1812 with Hugh Lawson White as president. When White resigned after his election to the United States Senate in 1827, the Board of Directors opted to liquidate the bank. The process was apparently complete by 1831.
