Abstract

This collection houses correspondence, meeting files, and other materials created and maintained by the University of Tennessee's Office of the President during the administration of Edward J. Boling.

Biographical/Historical Note

Edward Joseph Boling was born to Sam R. and Nerissa (Clark) Boling on 19 February 1922 in Sevier County, Tennessee. He earned his BS in Accounting (1948) and MS in Statistics (1950) from the University of Tennessee and his EdD in Educational Administration (1961) from Vanderbilt University. He was later awarded an honorary LL. D. from the University of Richmond (1984). Boling married Carolyn Pierce on 8 August 1950 and the couple had three children, Mark Edward, Brian Marshall, and Steven Clark. Boling worked with the Wilby-Kinsy Theatre Corporation in Knoxville (1940-1941) and with ALCOA (1941-1942) before joining the U. S. Army and serving in the European Theater (1943-1946). He returned to the University in Tennessee in 1948 as an Instructor of Statistics, but left to take a position with the Carbide and Chemical Corporation of Oak Ridge in 1950. Boling accepted a position with the Tennessee State Government in 1954 and served as the Budget Director of Tennessee (1955-1959) and as the Commissioner of Finance and Administration (1959-1961) before returning to the University of Tennessee as Vice President in 1961. He became President of the University in 1970, where he served until retiring in 1988. Boling also wrote two books, Forecasting University Enrollment (with D. A. Gardiner, 1952) and Methods of Objectifying The Allocation of Tax Funds to Tennessee State Colleges (1961).
