Abstract

This collection houses correspondence, notes, publications, and other records documenting Dr. Jonathan G. Utley's work with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the University of Tennessee's History Department between 1969 and 1994.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jonathan G. Utley was born on June 24, 1942. He earned his BA (1963) from Illinois College and his MA (1964) and PhD (1970) from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Utley came to the University of Tennessee in 1969, where he taught in the History Department for twenty-five years. He published several books during his career, including Going to War with Japan: 1937-1941 (1985) and An American Battleship at Peace and War: The USS Tennessee (1991). After his retirement, Utley divided his time between researching a biography of Tennessee politician Cordell Hull and coaching soccer in Chicago, Illinois.
