Biographical/Historical Note
Robert Hiram White was born to Martin and Susan White in Crockett County, Tennessee on November 2, 1883. He earned his bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University in 1910 and later studied history at George Peabody College and at the University of Chicago. White served on the first faculty of what is now Middle Tennessee State University from 1911 to 1919. Here, he met his wife, Margaret Taylor, who he married in 1917. After working for the Tennessee Department of Public Heath and then consulting for the Tennessee Department of Education, White was given the task of documenting Tennessee’s governors. This work earned him the official title of state historian from the Tennessee General Assembly in 1955. White is also well known for his widely used secondary school textbook, Tennessee: Its Growth and Progress. He died on June 7, 1970 in Nashville, Tennessee.
