Abstract

This collection houses files documenting the faculty of the Department of Classics from 1931 to 1996.

Biographical/Historical Note

The first Classical Department was established at East Tennessee University in 1848. When the University reopened after the Civil War, the curriculum included a Classical Course requiring such subjects as Greek, Latin, Livy, Ovid, Homer, Xenophon, and History. Greek and Latin became separate departments in 1900 and Classics was divided into the Department of Latin and Classical Archeology and the Department of Greek and Sanskrit in 1911. These two departments were reorganized as the Department of Latin and Roman Archaeology and the Department of Greek and Greek Archeology in 1916 before being merged into the Department of Classical Languages and Archaeology in 1933. The department's faculty increased as the curriculum expanded in the 1940s and the program was renamed the Department of Classics in 1968. Today, the Department offers undergraduate programs in Latin, Greek and Classical Civilization in addition to a masters program in Mediterranean Archaeology.
