Abstract

This collection consists primarily of reports documenting the work of the Educational Opportunities Planning Center (EOPC) and its successor, the Mid-Atlantic Appalachian Race Desegregation Assistance Center (MAARDAC), during the course of their existence.

Biographical/Historical Note

The University of Tennessee established the Educational Opportunities Planning Center (EOPC) in 1966 in order to facilitate the desegregation of Tennessee's schools. Professor Frederick Venditti, who had previously desegregated schools in Colorado and Kansas, headed the program. Although the Center and its work was controversial, it prospered under Venditti's judicious leadership and expanded its mandate to include schools in neighboring states. After the Civil Rights Act passed in 1972, the Center also addressed the issues of sexual bias and gender sensitivity. The EOPC merged with a similar center in South Carolina in 1978 to form the Mid-Atlantic Appalachian Race Desegregation Assistance Center (MAARDAC) and continued to operate until lack of funding forced it to disband in 1987.
