In this letter, First Auditor of the Treasury Department Thomas L. Smith provides Charles Lanman of Georgetown with the names of previous First Auditors. Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas L. Smith was born in Virginia in about 1787. Andrew Jackson appointed him Register of the Treasury in 1829 and he became the department's First Auditor in 1849. Smith died in Washington, D.C. on December 4, 1871.
