Biographical/Historical Note
William R. Caswell was born on October 22, 1809. Caswell served as attorney general for Tennessee’s Twelfth District, served on the board of directors for the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad, and worked for the Dandridge Bank. Caswell also served in the Mexican-American War as well as a Brigadier General in the Provisional Army of Tennessee during the Civil War. He resigned this position in October 1861 and died in 1862. He is buried in Knox County, Tennessee.
