Biographical/Historical Note
Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, was born in Fife, Scotland on July 20, 1766 to Charles and Martha (Whyte) Bruce. He was a British diplomat who had his staff remove artifacts from Athens to protect them from the wars and then shipped them to England, where they were displayed in the British Museum as the Elgin Marbles. He married Mary Nisbet on March 11, 1799; after divorcing her, he married Elizabeth Oswald on September 10, 1810. Bruce died on November 14, 1841.
Basil Hall was born on December 31, 1788, son of Sir James Hall. He had a long career in the British Navy and was made a fellow of the Royal Society. Hall wrote several books about his travels, including Fragments of Voyages and Travels and Account of a Voyage of Discovery to the West Coast of Corea and the Loo-Choo Islands. He married Margaret Hunter in 1825 and died on September 11, 1844.
