This manuscript is a transcript of a speech that William Curtis Stone gave in Celina, Tennessee to the Clay County High School Alumni Association on September 1, 1962. The majority of the document focuses on Clay County's early history and includes lists of prominent settlers. Stone closes his speech with excerpts from an 1876 letter by Captain J. R. Copeland, which gives a vivid description of life during Copeland’s childhood in what was then (early 19th century) called Overton County.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Curtis Stone was born on October 4, 1902 to John Henry and Melissa (Plumlee) Stone. After graduating from Clay County High School, he earned his BS (1928) and MS (1930) in Agriculture from the University of Tennessee. Stone married Mabel Woolard (1909-1988), and they had one son, William Curtis Stone Jr. Stone served as a major in the United States Army Reserve and wrote a book entitled History of Clay County, Tennessee. He died in July 1994.

James Richardson Copeland was born to Joseph Jefferson and Hannah (Carrier) Copeland in Overton County in 1806. He married Sallie Hayter, and the couple had ten children. Copeland served in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851 and from 1857 to 1859. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in Company H of the 25th Tennessee Infantry (CSA). Copeland died in Overton County in 1887.
