Eli Ritchey Indenture
This indenture binds a 13-year-old orphan named Eli Ritchey to William Slaughter as an apprentice until he reaches the age of 21. During his apprenticeship, Ritchey is to study the art of wheel making in addition to learning to read, write, and count. Ritchey is expected to "obey his masters lawful commands .... [and] in all things ... behave himself as a good and faithfull servant," while Slaughter must "constantly find and provide for [his] apprentice, sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel fiting for an apprentice, both in sickness and in health." The document is signed by Jesse Payne, William Slaughter, and James Sevier.
