Biographical/Historical Note
Charles Theodore Cates was born to Reuben Louis and Amanda Lavinia (Wilkinson) Cates in Maryville, Tennessee on January 8, 1840. He attended Blount County public schools and graduated from Maryville College in 1857. He married Martha Victoria Kidd on February 24, 1862, and the couple had four children: Charles Theodore, James M., Lula (Cates) Trimble, and Mary Jane. Cates enlisted in Company E of the 5th (McClellan's) Cavalry Battalion during the Civil War on August 13, 1861 and was promoted to Adjutant on September 1, 1861. The unit was later reorganized as Company K of the 2nd (Ashby's) Tennessee Cavalry.
After the war ended, Cates returned to Maryville, studied law, and was admitted to the Bar in 1866. He practiced law in Maryville, served as a director of a Maryville bank, and was one of the incorporators of Southern State Company in 1893. He also served briefly as the Attorney General for the 3rd judicial district of Tennessee (1872) and was appointed back-tax attorney (1895). Charles Cates died in Maryville on April 11, 1919.
