John Alexander Mebane Appointments
This collection consists of two military appointments for John Mebane, signed by President Millard Fillmore in 1852 and President Franklin Pierce in 1854. The appointments promoted John A. Mebane to Second Lieutenant (1852) and First Lieutenant (1854) in the Second Regiment of Artillery.

Biographical/Historical Note
John Alexander Mebane was born in Virginia around the year 1830. He joined the Military Academy as a Cadet in 1846. After graduation from the academy, he was promoted to the Army in 1850. He became Second Lieutenant in 1852 and First Lieutenant in 1854. Mebane died at the age of 24 in Louisiana on September 24, 1854.
