Biographical/Historical Note

The Tennessee Medical College was founded by Dr. Cawood in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1889. Originally for male students only, the college opened its doors to female students in 1904. Lincoln Memorial University purchased the medical college in 1905 and maintained it until 1914 when the school was closed due to financial difficulties.

Dr. Charles C. Lancaster was born on October 29, 1851, to Edwin R. Lancaster and Susan Lancaster. He was educated at the Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond. He married Bell C. G. Alderson (1855-?) on October 1, 1879, in Russell, Virginia. After Bell's death, he married Margaret Ely Pattison (1867-1897) on September 2, 1885, in Buck County, Virginia. Dr. "C. C." Lancaster died on February 3, 1891 at the age of 39. He is buried in the Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
