Abstract
This collection consists of two Washington National Monument Society Membership Certificates that contain facsimile signatures of President Zachary Taylor, John Quincy Adams, and James K. Polk and several other Washington dignitaries.
Biographical/Historical Note
The Washington Monument Society was organized by Zachary Taylor and other private citizens of Washington, D.C. to raise money for a monument to honor George Washington. After establishing their headquarters in the basement of the City Hall, they began a fund raising campaign. In order to give everyone in the country a chance to contribute to the monument, they limited the amount that each person could contribute to a dollar a year. When individuals decided to contribute funds, they would receive a certificate of membership to the Washington Monument Society.
