Biographical/Historical Note
George Washington Smith was born on November 13th, 1855 to Stephen Smith and Sarah Martin Pace Smith. He was a professor of History at Southern Illinois University from 1890 to 1935, and was active in the Illinois State Historical Society. He served as vice president to the Historical Society and as well as a member of the board. Professor Smith wrote several textbooks in addition to historical monographs and was known as a historian of Abraham Lincoln. He died at the age of 90 on November 20th, 1945, and is buried in White Hall Cemetery in Greene County, Illinois.
