Robert Steere Travel Booklet and Tour Contract
This collection consists of a travel booklet compiled by Robert Steere during his travels across Europe, including France, Italy, Austria, and Prussia. The booklet contains stamps from consuls as well as handwritten notes in the native languages of the countries Steere visited. In addition, the booklet contains a permit from the Secretary of State certifying Steere as a citizen of the United States. The booklet is dated between June 25, 1852 and April 5, 1853. The collection also includes a contract between Steere and his travel partners Amos Perry and Alex Farnum with Antonio Akoe, stating that Akoe will serve as their tour guide during their travels throughout Egypt, Palestine, and Syria. The contract outlines the group's travel plans and acknowledges Akoe's receipt of five thousand piastres in advance payment. It is dated March 6, 1853.

Biographical/Historical Note
Robert Steere was born on August 8 or 9, 1816 in Providence, Rhode Island. He married Abbie Elizabeth Wilbor and had five children with her. He was a proprietor of the firm E. M. Aldrich and Company, a wholesale grocer, and was a member of the Rhode Island Hospital Trustees. In 1853, he traveled with Amos Perry, a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society, and Alexander Farnum to Egypt. He passed away on August 1, 1880 in Mandarin, Florida. His son, Arthur Steele, was a resident of Knoxville, Tennessee.
