This collection consists of a bill of sale and a land grant, both to Hugh Graham of Claiborne County, Tennessee. The bill of sale concerns the sale of a horse previously owned by Jesse Webb to Graham and is dated January 19, 1827. The land grant concerns a 75-acre tract of land granted to Graham by the State of Tennessee. It is dated September 27, 1832.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hugh Graham was born in Tyrone, Ireland on October 20, 1784. He then emigrated from Ireland to the United States with his family. Graham partnered with William Houston to create a mercantile business under the name of Hugh Graham & Co. He married Catherine Nenney and had eight children. Graham was one of the wealthiest men in Claiborne County, Tennessee, and he owned a large tract of land near Tazewell, Tennessee. He also had a brick house built in Tazewell that is still standing, and his private library was ranked one of the largest in the South. He died on March 22, 1865.
