Louisville and Nashville Railroad Jellico Expansion Records

 Collection
Identifier: MS-0140

  • Staff Only

This collection consists of a booklet, correspondence, and geographical maps of the Tuckahoe Iron Property and Industrial Site, located in East Tennessee. These materials are dated from the early 1900s through 1902 and relate to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company's attempt to expand from La Follett, Tennessee to Jellico, Tennessee. In the correspondence, civil engineer Robert Habersham Elliott discusses ownership of different lengths of railroad and pieces of land by county. To complete the project, he states that it will be necessary to "regularly condemn the right of way." The maps display the potential areas for expansion using a geographical map of the Tuckahoe Iron Property. The Tuckahoe property is comprised of over 7,000 acres in Knox, Sevier, and Jefferson counties in Tennessee.

Abstract

This collection consists of a booklet, correspondence, and geographical maps of the Tuckahoe Iron Property and Industrial Site, located in East Tennessee. These materials are dated from the early 1900s through 1902 and relate to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company's attempt to expand from La Follette, Tennessee to Jellico, Tennessee.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Tuckahoe iron lands are comprised of over 7,000 acres in Knox, Sevier, and Jefferson counties in Tennessee and reside near the French Broad and Tennessee River. The land was owned partly by fee and mineral rights to these listed Tennessee counties. Minerals such as metallic iron, ailica, and phosphorus were all underground ores on the property.

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company operated freight and passengers throughout the southeastern United States. Milton H. Smith was the president of the company and served there for more than thirty years. During the Civil War, the railroad ran from Kentucky to Nashville which spanned both the Confederate and Union lines. After the war, the railroad continued to expand and reached to over 6,000 miles of railroad track system. Since 1982, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company merged and re-merged again to become a part of today's CSX transportation.
