This collection consists of two voter registration papers dated, June 29, 1865 and August 4, 1866 and one correspondence from the United States Marshal from May 21, 1877. The voter registration papers are acknowledgements that William Crutchfield had permission to vote in Hamilton County, Tennessee. The correspondence from the U.S. Marshal concerns the bankruptcy of Chas. H. Stanton estate in relation to William Crutchfield.

Abstract

This collection consists of two voter registration papers dated, June 29, 1865 and August 4, 1866, and one correspondence from the United States Marshal, dated May 21, 1877, regarding a bankruptcy case.

Biographical/Historical Note

William Crutchfield was born in Greene County, Tennessee, on November 16, 1824. He attended common schools. In 1850, he became a permanent resident of Chattanooga. During the Civil War, Crutchfield served as the Union Army Honorary Captain in the Chickamauga Campaign. He was an elected republican in the House of Representatives and served in the position from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. Crutchfield died in Chattanooga on January 24, 1890.
