Timothy Dwight wrote the first of these notes to J. C. Butler, Esq. on May 26, 1874 to acknowledge the receipt of his letter and the enclosed proof of Mrs. S. B. Dwight's photograph. The second note, addressed to Professor Baldwin and dated December 2, 1887, states that Dwight regrets that he will not be able to attend an event to which Baldwin had invited him.

The second note, addressed to Professor Baldwin and dated December 2, 1887, states that Dwight regrets that he will not be able to attend an event to which Baldwin had invited him.

Biographical/Historical Note

Timothy Dwight was born to James and Susan (Breed) Dwight in Norwich, Connecticut on November 16, 1828. He earned his B.A. (1849) and M.A. (1852) at Yale before studying at the Yale Divinity School (1850-1853) and at the Universities of Bonn and Berlin (1856-1858). He married Jane Wakeman Skinner on December 31, 1866 and the couple had two children: Helen Rood (1868-1909) and Winthrop Edwards (1872-1944). Dwight began his professional career as a tutor at Yale (1851-1855) and went on to become a Professor of Sacred Literature and New Testament Greek at Yale Divinity School (1858-1886) and President of Yale University (1886-1899). Timothy Dwight died on May 26, 1916.
