Abstract

In this letter, C. R. Leslie offers to show an unidentified friend some of John Constable's sketches that he has not seen previously.

Biographical/Historical Note

Charles Robert Leslie was born to American expatriates Robert and Lydia (Baker) Leslie in London, England on October 19, 1794. His parents soon returned to the United States, and Leslie attended the University of Pennsylvania before studying under Benjamin West and Washington Allston at the Royal Academy of Art in London, England (1811). He married Harriet Stone in 1825. Although he was apprenticed to booksellers Bradford & Inskeep in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1808-1811) and taught drawing at the U.S. Military Academy (1833), he spent most of his career painting in London. Among Leslie's best known works are Touchstone and Olivia. He also published a number of books, including Memoirs of the Life of John Constable (1843), A Handbook for Young Painters (1855), and Autobiographical Recollections (1860). Leslie died in London on May 5, 1859.
