F. B. Sanborn Note and Manuscript Regarding the Weare Family

This collection consists primarily of a sixteen-page manuscript describing the Weare family of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. It focuses on Meshech Weare, Nathaniel Weare, and Peter Weare and was apparently delivered at a local celebration of the Weare family of New Hampshire. The document is written partly on the stationary of the American Social Science Association and partly on the stationary of the Phenix Hotel in Concord, New Hampshire. Also included is a short poem signed by Sanborn and dated April 20, 1894.

Biographical/Historical Note

Franklin Benjamin Sanborn was born to Aaron and Lydia (Leavitt) Sanborn in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire on December 15, 1831. He earned his A.B. from Harvard in 1855. He was twice married: first to Ariana Walker on August 23, 1854 and second to Louisa Leavitt on July 16, 1862. For much of his professional career, Sanborn edited the Boston Commonwealth (1863-1867), the Springfield Republican (1868-1914), and the Journal of Social Science (1867-1897). He also helped to found the American Social Science Association, the National Prison Association, the National Conference of Charities, the Clarke School for the Deaf, the Massachusetts Infant Asylum, and the Concord School of Philosophy. Sanborn was particularly well known for his genealogical research and published a number of biographies, including Thoreau (1872), John Brown (1885), Dr. S. G. Howe (1891), Alcott (1893), Emerson (1895), Dr. Earle (1898), Personality of Thoreau (1902), Personality of Emerson (1903), and Final Life of Thoreau (1914). F. B. Sanborn died on February 24, 1917.
