Biographical/Historical Note

James Wood (J.W.) Gaut was born on February 26, 1823, in Jefferson County, Tennessee, to Robert and Mary Wood Gaut. J.W. Gaut was a prominent business man in Knoxville. He established the first wholesale grain business in the city. He was also the second president of the first Board of Trade in Knoxville. He later moved to Georgia. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army, mustering with the Fourth Artillery Regiment at Fort Pulaski. After serving in several prominent battles, such as the Battle of Atlanta in 1864, Gaut returned to Knoxville and resumed his business as a broker and wholesaler. He was appointed Postmaster of Knoxville and, in 1877, was appointed Trustee of the University of Tennessee. He served on the board until his death in March 1904.

Sarah Boldman was born July 8, 1830, to Henry (1799-1875) and Amy King Boldman (1805-1878) in Monroe County, Tennessee. She married J.W. Gaut on September 26, 1848, in Knoxville, Tennessee. The couple had thirteen children. Sarah died on May 7, 1903. Both her and her husband are buried in Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville.
