Biographical/Historical Note
John T. Burtwell's date of birth is unknown. His family moved from New London, Connecticut, to Ohio. In 1830, Burtwell lived in McNairy County, Tennessee and became a local merchant. He married Cornelia Bedford of Florence, Alabama. He subsequently moved to Florence, Alabama, and the couple had four children. He remained in Alabama until his death.
