Biographical/Historical Note

Elizabeth "Bess" Stickley Hines was born on September 13, 1881. She was the daughter of Josephine (Houston) and Vastine Stickley. Bess married Tom M. Hines, and the couple produced five children, three boys and two girls. After her husband died in 1920 and she had raised her children as a single mother, Bess became a writer for the Madisonville Democrat. She produced many articles relating to the history of Madisonville and the entire Monroe County, Tennessee. Bess died on November 26, 1963.

Madisonville is located in Monroe County in the southeastern part of Tennessee. The town was originally named Tellico; however, the name was changed to Madisonville in 1830 in honor of U.S. President James Madison.
