Abstract

This collection consists of a transcribed copy of a payroll statement for the men who served as officers and soldiers in Evan's Battalion under the 1786 Act of the Assembly of North Carolina. The statement book documents shortages in men by death, additions by enactments, substitutions, promotions, and payment in land.

Biographical/Historical Note

Evan's Battalion was established for the protection of the Cumberland County, who were among the first settlers. The soldiers were commanded by Major Evans and were given 400 hundred acres of land to supplement as pay. In order for the county to support the troop’s efforts, the North Carolina Legislature required all soldiers a tax to defray the expense of moving the provisions from the place of collection to the troops.

Acquisition Note

This collection was gifted to Special Collections by Mrs. Charles F. Wayland in 1936.
