Biographical/Historical Note
James Lynn was born in September of 1837 in Tennessee. He married Sarah Rogan (1838-1920) on September 5, 1861 and the couple had seven children: Samuel Edward, John Fleming, Carrie Powell, Ellen A., Leila Mae, Nannie Rhea, and Perry Rogan. Four of these children attended the University of Tennessee: Samuel E. (graduated 1884), John F. (graduated 1886), Nannie (withdrew 1894), and Perry (withdrew 1893). Lynn worked as a grocer in Kingsport, Tennessee before moving to Knoxville in the late 1870s or early 1880s. Here, he worked as a clerk and later as a salesman for Cowan, McClung and Co. James Lynn died in Knoxville, Tennessee on December 23, 1915.
