Biographical/Historical Note

The Tennessee Library Association is the professional support organization for librarians and library staff who work in Tennessee.

Ruth Ringo (1902-1976), originally from Clinton, KY, worked as a librarian at the University of Tennessee for most of her career. Starting as a cataloger, she became associate director of libraries in 1952 and continued in that position until her retirement in 1970. She served as president of TLA from 1959 to 1961.

Dorothy Ryan (1915-1979) served as head of circulation with the library at the University of Tennessee from 1946-1956, worked three years at the Indiana University Libraries as executive assistant to the director, and then returned in 1959 to UT as head of the department of library service. She was president of TLA from 1964 to 1965.
