Abstract

This collection consists of a commission, dated October 22, 1807, from the Governor of the Territory of Orleans, William C.C. Claiborne, appointing Paul D'Arcantel as Justice of the Peace for the Parish of New Orleans.

Biographical/Historical Note

William C.C. Claiborne was born in 1775 near Sussex County, Virginia. He attended Richmond Academy and William and Mary College. At the age of 16, he moved to New York to work as a clerk under the U.S. House of Representatives. He began to study law and in 1794 moved to Tennessee to start a practice. Governor John Sevier appointed Claiborne to the Tennessee Supreme Court in 1796. In 1797, he succeeded Andrew Jackson in the House of Representatives and served there until 1801. He then served as Governor of Mississippi territory from 1801-1803. In 1812, Claiborne became the first Governor of Louisiana. Claiborne died on November 27, 1817.
