Abstract
This collection contains a handwritten note from English critic and writer Leigh Hunt, concerning a visit to a friend's house.
Biographical/Historical Note
James Henry Leigh Hunt, most famously known as Leigh Hunt, was born on October 19, 1784 in Middlesex, England. He was a poet, editor, critic, and essayist. Two of his most famous poems are Abou Ben Adhem and Jenny Kissed Me. His first volume of poetry was published in 1801 and was titled Juvenilia. In 1808, Leigh and his brother John started The Examiner which they used to advocate for the abolishment of the slave trade, Catholic emancipation, and Parliament reform. They were both imprisoned in 1813 for the publications about Prince Regent. Hunt continued writing from prison and was eventually released in 1815. He moved to Hampstead. He became acquainted with people like Percy Shelley and John Keats. He applauded Keats in The Examiner which led to backlash from Blackwood's Magazine and called the group the Cockney School. Hunt died on August 28, 1859 in Putney, London, England.
