Abstract
This collection contains a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, photographs, and letters/invitations received by Edwin Sheddan Cunningham, an American diplomat. Also included is one folder with loose items from the scrapbook.
Biographical/Historical Note
Edwin S. Cunningham was born July 6, 1868, in Sevier County, Tenn. He graduated from Maryville College and received an LLB from the University of Michigan. In 1898, he was appointed consul to Aden, Arabia, and transferred to Bergen, Norway, in 1903. In 1906, Cunningham became consul to Durban, South Africa, and from 1910-1912, he served as consul to Bombay, India. Cunningham also served as United States consul-general to Singapore in 1912, to Hankow, China, from 1916-1919, and to Shanghai, China, between 1920-1932. Cunningham died on January 20, 1953 and is buried in Maryville, Tennessee.
