This collection is a set of documents that Edith Lanier Deaderick Erskine sent to UT Special Collections in 1971. It consists of the Washington, D.C. newspaper, National Intelligencer, from Tuesday, April 2, 1850. The newspaper is accompanied by a short note from Mrs. Erskine which says that the paper was preserved by the mother of S. T. Heiskell, who was a mayor of Knoxville at one point. In addition, there is a Grove Park Inn business card and the envelope in which Mrs. Erskine sent her orginal letter to Special Collections at UT. The letters of correspondence between Mrs. Erskine and John Dobson, the Special Collection librarian in 1971, are included in the collection, and many of these letters include typed documents detailing Mrs. Erskine's ancestry, which is closely tied to Knoxville.

Abstract

This collection is composed of a variety of letters and other documents by Edith Erskine in 1971. Several of her ancestors are notable in east Tennessee history, and this collection provides more information on their genealogy and role in early Knoxville.

Biographical/Historical Note

Edith Lanier Deaderick Erskine was born on September 28, 1889. She was married to John Vincent Erskine. Her maternal grandfather was William Heiskell (1788-1871), a Tennessee politician who was on the first Board of Directors at the University of Tennessee and appointed Receiver of Customs in Knoxville by Abraham Lincoln. Her great-great-uncle, John Williams, was the co-founder of the city of Knoxville. Mrs. Erskine was a member of the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Somerset Chapter Magna Charta Barons. In addition, Mrs. Erskine wrote several books of poetry written between the years of 1943-1962. She also compiled a genealogy of King Egbert Redburg of England. Edith died on May 18, 1974.
