This collection includes an appointment for George S. James as the second lieutenant in the fourth regiment of artillery. This appointment is dated June 27, 1856 and signed July 11, 1856 by the U.S. Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, and U.S. President, Franklin Pierce.
Biographical/Historical Note
George S. James was born in 1829 and died September 14, 1862 from a wound during the Battle of South Mountain (Maryland).
Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was the 14th President of the United States, serving 1853-1857.
Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was the 23rd United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857. He later became the President of the Confederate States during the Civil War from 1862-1865.
