Nathaniel Cowan Letter
This collection consists of one letter written by Nathaniel Cowan, dated June 28, 1797, concerning the amount of whiskey purchases he had completed. He writes to a Jesse Payne reporting about a shipment of flour and whiskey that he has recently received from Payne, via a Mr. Young.

Biographical/Historical Note
Nathan Cowan was born in Augusta County, Virginia in 1762. Cowan is one of the earliest settlers of Knoxville arriving in 1792. Cowan and his brother started Knoxville's first store. which sold a variety of goods. The store remained a Knoxville landmark for several years. Cowan died in 1802.
