Abstract
This collection consists of a single letter addressed to President Ulysses Grant from Gideon Pillow on March 21, 1873. The letter concerns Gideon heading to Washington with his wife to discuss political issues.
Biographical/Historical Note
Gideon Johnson Pillow was born on June 8, 1806, in Williamson County, Tennessee. A farmer and lawyer in Memphis, Pillow also served as a Brigadier General in the Mexican-American War and Civil War. He was a friend of James K. Polk and helped him to secure the presidential nomination in 1844. Pillow was married twice: once to Mary Martin (1812-1869) and once to Mary Eliza Dickson (1846-1913). He died on October 8, 1878 in Helena, Arkansas, and is buried in Shelby County, Tenn.
