Biographical/Historical Note

Robert Edward Temple was born to Robert Loomis and Lillie M. (Schilo) Temple on March 6, 1934. He earned his Divinity Degree from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and served as Pastor in several Presbyterian churches in Pennsylvania and Ohio before moving to Townsend, Tennessee with his family in 1970. In 1971, Temple and several business and civic leaders founded the Smoky Mountain Passion Play, which depicted Jesus Christ's last week of life. It ran from 1973 to 1992, during which time over half a million people attended a performance. Robert Temple died on August 29, 2007 in Maryville, Tennessee.

Temple married Nancy McCartney in about 1955 and the couple had six children.
