Abstract

This collection is made up of two receipts, each for a three-dollar, 52-week subscription to the Knoxville Enquirer newspaper, including the first two years of publication. The receipts are made out to “Gen. A. Jackson”.

Biographical / Historical

The Knoxville Enquirer was a four-page broadsheet weekly newspaper published by King and Barry in Knoxville, Tennessee, beginning in mid-1824 and ending a few years later. It consisted of articles covering politics and legislature, business, and local news, as well as obituaries and classified listings.

The subscriber listed on the receipts is "Gen. A. Jackson" likely referring to Andrew Jackson who was in the middle of an unsuccessful presidential campaign when this newspaper was first published in 1824, but was instead elected as Tennessee State Senator that same year. He would become the seventh president of the United States four years later. Jackson served two presidential terms, and is known for his polarizing political actions, especially for the Indian Removal Act, which displaced tens of thousands of Native Americans and led to many deaths.
