Abstract

This collection contains a letter written in early 1862 by Joseph D. Hickey of Newport, Tennessee to the Hon. James T. Heiskell asking for any information about his son John M. Hickey, whom he had not heard from since the beginning of the Civil War.

Biographical / Historical

Jospeh D. Hickey was a farmer on a three hundred acre farm in Newport, Tennessee before the Civil War began. By 1860, he had only two living sons along with several daughters. Younger son John M. Hickey lived in Prairie Township, Missouri in 1860, working as a teacher until he enlisted in the Confederate Army in May 1862. He was wounded in the right leg and shoulder in 1864 and was discharged. He married in 1872.

Austin C. Hickey, two years older than John served in the Army and was captured as one of over twelve thousand Confederate prisoners of war at the Battle of Fort Donelson. He also survived the war, and both he and his brother became lawyers.

John B. Clark held several political offices during the Civil War; at the time of this letter, he was the Confederate States Senator for Missouri, a position he held from February 1862 until February 1864.
