Abstract

This collection contains a two-part letter, the first part from a Lt. Lambert addressed to "Major Bills", introducing Captain J. W. Stewart and asking for any help Bills might provide in seeking volunteers for the Tennessee Artillery Corps. Stewart penned the second part, further explaining his aims for recruiting volunteers.

Biographical / Historical

It is unclear who the three men in the letter are, as no first names are mentioned. It is clear this recruiting took place within Tennessee, but there are a number of military personnel named J.W. Stewart in Civil War records and it is unknown which this letter came from.

It is likely that Stewart experienced battle during the Civil War, as artillery was a vital part of military strategy, and Tennessee was an important target for the Union to take from the Confederacy. West Tennessee was taken by the Union in 1862, and East Tennessee in 1864.
