This collection features regimental orders from John Coffee in 1813 entailing his regiment's planned participation in the Battle of Talladega in Huntsville, Alabama.
Biographical/Historical Note
John R. Coffee (June 2, 1772 - July 7, 1833) was a merchant, land speculator, and a lifelong friend of Andrew Jackson. He commanded troops under Jackson during the Creek War and the War of 1812. When Jackson became President of the United States, he appointed Coffee as a representative to negotiate with Southeast American Indian tribes. Coffee married Mary Donelson, daughter of Captain John Donelson III and Mary Purnell and niece of Jackson's wife Rachel Donelson.
The Battle of Talladega was fought between the Tennessee militia and the Red Stick Creek Indians on November 9, 1813 in Alabama.
