This collection contains articles, research, and correspondence on the Melungeon people. It contains articles such as “Melungeons: The Vanishing Colony of Newman’s Ridge” by Henry R. Price and “A Theory Concerning the Melungeons” by Rollin W. Gillespie. It also includes letters to and from Rollin Gillespie about research on Melungeons dated between 1973 to 1976, newspaper articles on the Melungeons, and a copy of the 1971 “Walk toward the Sunset Souvenir Program.”

Biographical/Historical Note

John D. Gillespie was a 1962 graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was a cousin to Rollin W. Gillespie.

Rollin W. Gillespie (April 7, 1909-April 18, 2003) was a scientist who has worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories, General Electric Company, and NASA among other places. Additionally, he focused much of his research on archaeology and epigraphy including research into the history of Melungeons.
