Abstract

This collection consists of one letter from Joseph Anderson to Thomas L. McKenney on July 21, 1820, regarding a bond given by Angel de Ferriere for the repayment of 3500 francs for the expenses of passage to France from the U.S. for eight individuals.

Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Inslee Anderson was born on November 5, 1757 in Pennsylvania. He studied law and was a Freemason. He was a soldier, judge, and politician. He served as a U.S. Senator for Tennessee from 1799-1815 and served as a judge of the Southwest Territory in the 1790s. He served as the First Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury from 1815-1836. He died April 17, 1837 and was interred in the Congressional Cemetery.

Thomas Loraine McKenney was born on March 21, 1785. He served as superintendent of several programs regarding the affairs of indigenous peoples from 1816-1830. McKenney died in New York on February 19, 1859.

Angel de Ferriere was born at Niort, Department Des Deux Sevres, France on January 8, 1769. He attended the Military School at Brien. Ferriere was an ancient noble at the time of the French Revolution and had to flee France for Holland and then to America in 1793. While living in New York, he met Polly Dennie, the daughter of a friend, and married her. He later bought 3,000 acres of land in Madison County, Wisconsin. In 1817, he went back to France to reclaim his inheritance. He had five children. He died September 17, 1832 at the age of 63.
