This collection consists of the photostatic copy of the Index to "A Map of Kentucky and the Southwest Territory 1794," compiled and edited by Dr. Thomas P. Field, Professor of Geography, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, 1965. Fields writes a preface to discuss his research and the methods he used to create such a tool. He also explains the logic behind the layout of the map and his attempts to expand ideas off of similar maps. The index includes all of the locations and landforms listed on the map in alphabetical order. There is also a bibliography of the sources Fields used for his research as well as an ink copy of the map itself.

Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas Parry Field (1914-1990) was born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, but moved with his parents to Johnson City, Tennessee, when his father, Frank Field, obtained a teaching position at East Tennessee State Normal School. Field earned degrees at State Teachers College, Johnson City (B.S., 1935), George Peabody College for Teachers (M.A., 1940), and the University of North Carolina (Ph.D., 1948). He taught at State Teachers College in 1940 and 1941, and in 1948 he began teaching with the Geography Department at the University of Kentucky, Lexington where he stayed until his retirement.
