Biographical/Historical Note

Harrod Jones Anderson was born April 22, 1795 to John and Mary Trevillian Anderson in Hanover County, Virginia. He eventually moved to Haywood County, Tennessee, where he owned land at Toulon. He was appointed postmaster of Belmontaine in 1833. He married Matilda Woodson Hope (1800-1867) and they had several children. He died in Haywood County on November 10, 1861.

Francis Preston Blair, Sr. (1791-1876) was a politician and also served as editor of the Washington, D.C. newspaper, the Globe from 1830-1849. While editor of the paper, Blair supported the Democratic Party and served on Andrew Jackson’s “kitchen cabinet.” In 1854, he helped start the new Republican Party. Blair married Eliza Violet Gist in 1812 and they had three sons: Montgomery (1813-1883), James (1819-1852), and Francis Preston, Jr. (1821-1875).
