This collection houses sixty-six volumes documenting Swiss immigrant Alfred Buffat's life and work in Knox County, Tennessee.

Biographical/Historical Note

Alfred Buffat was born on December 8, 1840 in Aigle, Switzerland to Pierre Francois and Sylvie Louise Tauxe Buffat. In July of 1849, the family emigrated to Tennessee and settled on a three-hundred acre farm near Spring Place. Pierre Buffat founded Buffat's Mill on this farm in 1861 and Alfred joined him in the business in 1865. Alfred Buffat was also very active in the Knoxville community, serving as a school director for the Second District (1882-1893), a justice of the peace (elected in 1894 and re-elected in 1900), a delegate to the National Farmers' Congress (1902) and a trustee for Knox county (1904 and 1908). Alfred Buffat died on September 4, 1908 in Knoxville.

Alfred Buffat married French immigrant Elisa Bolli (1842-1825) on September 14, 1865 and the couple had six sons and two daughters.
